Good pruning is mostly subtraction with a plan. You take out what's dead, what's rubbing, and what's in the way, and you leave the structure that holds the tree up. Done right, nobody can tell we were there except that the branches are off the roof.
What we prune for
- Deadwood and hanging limbs over roofs, drives, and play areas
- Clearance from siding, gutters, service drops, and the sidewalk
- Crossing and rubbing branches that are wounding each other
- Canopy raising so mowers and light both get underneath
- Structural pruning on young trees to prevent bad forks later
Timing in Michigan
Dormant-season pruning in late winter is easiest on most hardwoods and easiest to read without leaves. Oaks in particular should be pruned in the dormant season to avoid oak wilt pressure. Hazardous limbs come off whenever they're found.
Cleanup
Brush is chipped on site, larger wood is cut and hauled, and the lawn and beds get raked and blown before we pull out. If we're already on your lawn route, the trimming visit gets scheduled the same week.

Common Questions
- Can you just top the tree to make it shorter?
- We don't top trees. It removes the structure that supports the canopy and forces weak regrowth that fails in storms. Height and weight can be reduced properly with reduction cuts back to lateral limbs.
- How often should trees be pruned?
- Young trees benefit from structural pruning every few years. Mature shade trees usually need attention every five to seven years, or sooner if limbs are over a roof or blocking the drive.
- Will trimming help my lawn grow under the tree?
- Often, yes. Thinning and raising the canopy lets more light through, which is half the battle for grass under a maple. The other half is overseeding with a shade-tolerant mix.
