Mulch Installation in Metro Detroit
Weeded, edged, and mulched at the right depth — the fastest visible upgrade a property can get.
Mulch is not decoration. Three inches of it holds soil moisture through a July dry spell, keeps root-zone temperature stable, blocks the light weed seed needs, and slowly feeds the soil as it breaks down. It also happens to make a property look finished, which is why most people call about it.
How we do it
- Pull weeds and clear matted debris out of the bed
- Cut a fresh spade edge to give the bed a defined line
- Install mulch at roughly three inches, raked even
- Pull mulch back off trunks and stems — no mulch volcanoes
- Blow off walks, drives, and patios before we leave
The volcano problem
Mulch piled up against a tree trunk traps moisture against the bark, rots it, and invites girdling roots. It is everywhere in Metro Detroit subdivisions and it slowly kills trees. We pull mulch back a few inches from every trunk and stem, every time.
Timing
Late April through early June is the busy window. Fall mulching is underrated though — it insulates roots through winter and means one less thing competing for time in spring.

Common Questions
- How much mulch do I need?
- One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. We measure your beds and quote the exact yardage rather than estimating from a photo.
- Should the old mulch come out first?
- Not always. If the existing layer is thin and broken down, we top-dress over it. If it is matted three or four inches thick, it is holding water against the crowns and needs to be pulled or turned first.
- What kind of mulch is best?
- Double-shredded hardwood holds its position on slopes and breaks down into the soil. Dyed black and brown hold color longer and read cleaner against a modern house. All three work; it is mostly a look preference.
